Fundación Laboral launches the 'Upp Games' app, with mini-games to improve knowledge about prevention in work at height

This mobile application is the final result of the European project Upp Games, part of the Erasmus+ programme, which concludes after 27 months of work in the field of Health and Safety in the construction industry, carried out by seven partners from Spain, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Slovenia.

After more than two years, the European project Upp Games has completed and presented its application for mobile devices, aimed at strengthening the skills of construction professionals in the field of risk prevention in work at height. Fundación Laboral de la Construcción, as leader of this initiative, coordinated the work done to design this training game, as well as the other results of the project by seven partners from Spain, Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Luxembourg.

The Upp Games app -available on Google Play in Spanish, English, German, French, Italian and Slovenian, and on the iTunes Store in English- has six mini-games in which users are introduced to real-life scenarios and common situations on the construction site. The users can test their knowledge of Health and Safety at height, and thus strengthen their skills in relation to the measures needed to prevent or minimize accidents at work. These games have six levels that seek to reinforce the workers' skills to: work safely at heights; wear proper personal protective equipment; to safely work by collective protection; falling of objects; and safety signs.

Each level allows the user to go beyond each floor of a building, so the game ends when the user completes the floors of the entire building:

  • Level 1. Mess in the work area.
  • Level 2. The good choice.
  • Level 3. The lifting platform is damaged.
  • Level 4. A wall concrete panel has to be installed.
  • Level 5. Falling objects and materials.
  • Level 6. Working on the roof on a summer day at noon.

The project partners have chosen to allow the levels to be played individually, following the order that the user considers or that the teacher establishes, since this app is designed to be used in the classroom as well. In this way, the self learning part is reinforced and the possibility for the trainers of the sector to design their teaching itinerary without a strong structure.

The application has a Manual (in English) with instructions for downloading and handling, and a Trainer's Guide (in all languages of the partnership) to argue the methodological approach of the games' structure, and to facilitate their use and application in Vocational Education and Training (VET) programmes. In this sense, the Upp Games mini-games design have based on three training approaches: the psychological perspective inherent to the causes of occupational accidents in construction; the main characteristics of the use of gamification in training; and the concept of 'learning outcome', which according to the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training (Cedefop), determines the "set of knowledge, skills and/or competences that a person has obtained and/or is able to show at the end of a given formal, non-formal or informal learning process".

When designing each game or scenario, the degree of knowledge, skills and competencies that the user must obtain at the end of the game or scenario has been taken into account. For this purpose, a system of Recognition of Acquired Knowledge has been established, based on the methodology implemented by the European Qualification Framework for Lifelong Learning (EQF-MEC) -in this case, in levels 2, 3 and 4 of this Framework-.
